WIKWIHEBA MWANA is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2006 with a mission of
helping children with disabilities to enjoy equal rights as their siblings in families.
Wikwiheba Mwana has started as boarding Center from 2007 until late 2018 when the
Government of Rwanda initiated a Policy of Tubarerere Mu Muryango TMM- Let’s raise
Children in Families). Since then, the Center offers day care quality inclusive rehabilitation
services, education, medical care, and social services to children with intellectual disabilities and
their families.
Wikwiheba Mwana is based in rural area where children with disabilities run the risk of being
marginalized by their own families. In some families, there is still tendency is hiding children in
back yards of the households. Together with Local Officials, Wikwiheba Mwana conduct regular
community awareness for the community members to know that persons with disabilities are
entitled with the same human rights and same constitutional rights. The result of awareness is
that so far, parents have taken children with intellectual disabilities to get care. Those with other
disabilities are referred to relevant special Centers.
Wikwiheba Mwana is a charitable organization that strives to respond to the needs of children
with cerebral palsy and other severe disabilities to cope with everyday life and afford a smile.
With possible means, the children are provided with care, nutrition, clothing, and medication.
We thank parents and community who daily partners with us, after awareness on rights and
laws relating to protection of persons with disabilities, laws that guarantee them the rights to
live in a family and be cared for with dignity.
Healthcare and education to children with disabilities are the Objectives of Wikwiheba Mwana
Center. Both areas complement each other to bring hope and optimism to children with
disabilities.
